A new recruitment campaign aims to attract more teachers to ACT public schools.

The ACT Government launched the Teach in Canberra recruitment campaign on 28 August to attract new teachers into the Australian Capital Territory public school system.

The Teach in Canberra campaign aims to attract teachers from New Zealand, regional Victoria, regional New South Wales, regional Queensland, and Greater Western Sydney to apply for ACT-based teaching roles.

ACT Minister for Education and Youth Affairs Yvette Berry says every ACT public school student deserves access to quality education and highlighted the positive impact and lasting influence great teachers can have on the lives of young people.

“There is no greater vocation than being a teacher and shaping the lives of future generations,” Berry says.

“Teachers play a critical role in cultivating our children’s future and have a lasting impact on students, families and the wider community. The ACT Government is working hard to recruit teachers to join our growing public school system now and for the 2025 school year.

“We want teachers across Australia and New Zealand to know that ACT public schools are leaders in public sector education. We offer competitive pay and conditions that support teacher wellbeing with new educator salaries starting from $86,253, provide up to $12,000 in relocation expenses, and have a new three-year educator support program to help graduate teachers thrive. Our Enterprise Agreement for teachers is among the best in the nation.

“We all know Canberra is a great place to live, work and raise a family. The Teach in Canberra campaign will help us spread the word to teachers about the opportunities that ACT public schools can offer.”

Inspiring students to become teachers

By establishing a stronger presence at expos and career days, the campaign will see the ACT Education Directorate work closely with schools and universities across both Canberra and regional New South Wales to encourage more students to pursue teacher career pathways.

In the university sector, the ACT’s Permit to Teach program enables eligible tertiary students to teach in local public schools.

Students in the final stage of their degree from the Australian Catholic University (ACU), University of Canberra, and Charles Sturt University (CSU) campuses in NSW, as well as Swinburne University, can access the opportunity to gain classroom experience as part of a paid placement in an ACT public school.

“We know we need to hire more teachers to meet the needs of our growing city, and we are committed to ensuring that we address the challenges of the national teacher shortage to keep delivering a high-quality public education system across our city,” says Berry.
