Every September, Australian schools sit inside a rare alignment. Wattle Day arrives on 1 September. National Biodiversity Month begins at the same time, and native wildflowers hit peak bloom across much of the country. Magpies nest. Gum trees push out fresh leaves. In short, the living curriculum walks right up to the classroom window.
Most schools mark the season with a colourful noticeboard and move on. That is a missed opportunity. Spring Day, celebrated at the start of September, can anchor some of the most effective teaching of the entire year. The evidence for outdoor and environmental learning is strong. The timing is unmatched. The activities cost almost nothing.
A Season That Does Half the Teaching
Australian spring offers ecological richness that few countries can match. More than 12,000 wildflower species bloom across Western Australia alone. Furthermore, the nation’s South West forms one of only 34 global biodiversity hotspots. More than half of all vascular plant species found there exist nowhere else on Earth.
There is urgency behind the beauty. Native grasslands hold much of this wildflower diversity. Yet they rank among the most heavily cleared habitats on the continent, with over 90 percent gone in some regions. As a result, students who learn to notice these species become the adults who protect them. Spring Day works because the local environment becomes the textbook. Spotting a magpie nest, identifying blooming wattle or logging a lizard on the school oval grounds abstract science in something students can touch.
Outdoor Exploration and Citizen Science
The strongest Spring Day activities turn students into working scientists. For a Native BioBlitz, students survey the school oval or a nearby bushland reserve. They log native birds, lizards and insects to practise real data collection. Alternatively, Spring Adventure Bingo cards can feature distinctly Australian signs of spring, such as magpie nests, wattle blooms and fresh gum leaves. For older students, water quality testing offers another avenue. Classes test local creeks or school taps and connect their results to global conservation programmes like EarthEcho International.
The results speak clearly. The inaugural National School Citizen Science B&B BioBlitz drew 60 schools from every state and territory. Together, they recorded over 2,300 observations of 635 species uploaded to iNaturalist and the CSIRO’s Atlas of Living Australia. One Darwin student called it “the most fun he had ever had”. His teacher reported he was “the most engaged he had seen”. Crucially, only 5 percent of citizen science projects in Australia are urban-based. Yet many threatened species live in urban areas where most schools sit. Every schoolyard observation therefore fills a genuine gap in Australia’s scientific record. Students contribute real data, and scientists actually need it.
Gardening, Sustainability and Getting Hands Dirty
Spring is planting season, which makes it the natural moment to teach stewardship through action. Seed bombs made from clay, compost and native wildflower seeds such as Everlastings give students a tangible stake in school garden beds. Similarly, recycled bird feeders built from milk cartons, pop sticks or pinecones teach reuse. They also attract the very wildlife students studied that morning. Meanwhile, a classroom butterfly kit lets students track a full lifecycle in a STEM observation journal.

Fallen bark, leaves and twigs dipped in washable paint become textured landscape art on large paper rolls. Students can also create cupcake case minibeasts, transforming flattened patty cases and wooden pegs into bright 3D butterflies and beetles. A collaborative spring mural, in addition, brings the whole school together. Each student adds a handprint flower or paper plate ladybug to a shared hallway scene. Writing activities translate equally well outdoors. Acrostic and haiku poetry composed beneath the trees teaches syllable structure and descriptive language through direct observation.
An outdoor storytime picnic moves the library lesson onto picnic rugs in the mild September weather. Spring wellbeing colouring sheets featuring Australian flora and fauna, meanwhile, offer a calm afternoon wind-down. The wellbeing case is as solid as the academic one. A systematic review of 147 studies found nature-specific outdoor learning delivers measurable socio-emotional, academic and wellbeing benefits. These include stronger engagement, improved self-concept and better collaborative skills. Time in nature also replenishes attention and working memory, which improves the indoor lessons that follow.
What This Means for School Leaders and Policy-Makers
The research points consistently in one direction. Outdoor and environmental learning improves test scores, attention, engagement and behaviour. Green space also reduces chronic absenteeism and stress. Furthermore, students themselves consistently emphasise hands-on activities and meaningful participation when asked what works in sustainability education. Spring Day, therefore, offers a low-cost, low-barrier entry point into all of it.
The key question for school leaders is one of consistency. A single celebration in September builds a memory. In contrast, a whole-school commitment to seasonal, place-based learning builds scientific literacy, environmental stewardship and student wellbeing year after year. Community partnerships with local land care groups, councils and citizen science networks can extend a one-day event into an ongoing programme. The wattle blooms every September regardless. The schools that plan for it will find students more engaged, data more valuable and communities more connected to the landscapes they share. The season arrives on schedule. The learning is there for any school ready to step outside.
