High school students from all school sectors across New South Wales (NSW) will come together in Sydney this month for the 2023 Together for Humanity (TFH) NSW Youth Summit, which will be held at the Parliament of NSW and St Stephen’s Uniting Church on Thursday, 19 October.
The event’s aim is to inspire and equip Australia’s future leaders to be agents for positive change and advocates for inclusion in their communities and will unite students from 16 metropolitan and regional schools. The schools involved represent NSW’s Independent, Catholic and Government sectors, with Catholic, Islamic, Jewish and other faiths represented.
By voicing their ideas around diversity, inclusion and community cohesion, and speaking specifically about issues that are directly impacting their local areas and school communities, the organisers hope the collaborative ideas and proposed actions that the students are encouraged to generate through presentations and workshopping sessions can help Australia take positive steps towards becoming a country free from prejudice and division.
Subject matter experts and speakers are also an important aspect of the event, with journalist Amelia Moseley (ABC’s Behind the News and BTN High) delivering the keynote speech.
The Youth Summit returns to a post-COVID world
TFH has run diversity education programs with schools for more than 20 years and has held Youth Summits since 2016. This will be the first NSW Summit since a COVID-related two-year break in 2021 and 2022. Most recently, TFH hosted its inaugural Victorian Youth Summit at the University of Melbourne in July this year.
TFH is an inclusive educational not-for-profit organisation focused on creating a more socially cohesive Australian society by fostering intercultural understanding within school communities and helping students to promote belonging, appreciate differences and navigate stereotypes. The organisation works directly with schools to run free well-being and educational programs, such as the Youth Summit, online learning courses, teacher professional development, as well as interactive curriculum-linked workshops designed to help deepen understanding of diverse cultures, experiences and faiths.
