The Shore School Council has announced the appointment of Dr Peter Miller BEd (Hons), MEd, EdD as the 10th Headmaster of Sydney Church of England Grammar School (Shore), with his tenure planned to commence in January 2026.
The school’s announcement describes it as a “milestone appointment” that “is the culmination of a comprehensive global search and a rigorous recruitment process that considered a diverse array of highly qualified candidates”.
“The Council selected Dr Miller based on his deep commitment to educational excellence and exceptional leadership. Dr Miller’s values and vision are also strongly aligned with Shore’s mission, making him an ideal fit to lead Shore into its next chapter,” the statement says.
Miller will officially assume the role after a handover process led by the current Headmaster, Dr John Collier, and supported by the Shore Council and Executive Leadership Team.
He joins Shore as an accomplished educational leader with more than three decades of experience in prestigious schools across Australia and the United Kingdom.
“Renowned for his commitment to academic excellence, pastoral care, and leadership development, his educational philosophy emphasises belonging, community, and a strong connection to place alongside achievement in academics and co-curricular activities,” the school’s announcement states.
Since joining The Geelong College in 2016, Miller has spearheaded initiatives to enhance academic programs, strengthen student wellbeing, and deliver a significant master planning project. His earlier roles include Head of College at All Saints’ College, Bathurst, and Head of Middle School at Barker College. Dr Miller’s relationship with Shore began in 1989 when he taught at the school for twelve years.
Academically, Miller holds a Doctor of Education from the University of New England, a Master of Education from the University of Nottingham and a Bachelor of Education (Hons.) from the University of Sydney. He has also completed advanced leadership training at Harvard Business School, Cambridge University, and the Cranlana Centre for Ethical Leadership.
Beyond the classroom, he’s described as “an avid rower who has represented Australia internationally and contributed to the sport as a coach and administrator”.
“On behalf of the school community I am excited to welcome Dr Peter Miller as our Headmaster Elect. His leadership and commitment to fostering a nurturing, inclusive, and challenging academic environment are essential as Shore continues to evolve and uphold its distinguished legacy,” Rob Clarke, School Council Chair, says.
“Throughout the interview process, we were particularly impressed with his commitment to upholding Christian values, his experience in the delivery of large-scale master planning projects and his proven understanding of the unique needs of male students. We believe that he is exceptionally well-placed to understand the unique requirements of teaching and learning for boys and to actively support Shore’s tradition of nurturing resilient, compassionate young men.
“I am absolutely thrilled to be returning to Shore, a truly remarkable institution and community. I look forward to working alongside an exceptional team of dedicated teaching and support staff, united by a shared commitment to nurturing and empowering our students to thrive.”
