NSW celebrates record Indigenous HSC graduations, but education gaps persist
On 4 July 2025, a new report revealed that 1,934 Indigenous students successfully completed their Higher School Certificate (HSC) in New South Wales in 2024 the highest number on record. Educators credit this achievement to targeted cultural support, dedicated mentoring, and leadership programs introduced in schools with high Indigenous enrolment, such as Dubbo College.
Mentoring and cultural inclusion programs drive progress
Schools like Dubbo College have highlighted the positive impact of mentoring and cultural inclusion initiatives in supporting Indigenous students through to graduation. These programs foster a sense of belonging, promote student leadership, and provide tailored academic support, contributing to improved retention and attainment.
National data shows persistent education inequality
Despite this milestone in NSW, national NAPLAN data continues to reveal a significant disparity in educational outcomes. Indigenous students are failing key literacy and numeracy benchmarks at four times the rate of their non-Indigenous peers, underscoring the urgent need for broader systemic change.
Calls for a national roadmap to inclusive education
Advocates and education leaders are calling for a coordinated national roadmap to inclusive education, with stronger reforms to address persistent inequalities. They emphasise the importance of expanding successful support programs and ensuring culturally responsive teaching across all Australian schools.
