Tackling generative AI in the classroom

Microsoft Education Industry Lead Travis Smith, Wordle Account Manager Lisa Sayers and University of Queensland Deputy Associate Dean Jason Lodge take the stage to talk using AI to boost classroom results.

With programs like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini make waves amongst students and schools, the trio agreed that generative AI tools could “bridge the gap” for under resourced educators in regional and remote areas of Australia, but issued warnings over the potential dangers in undermining current assessment and learning modules.

“We have to point AI at the areas we want to solve. The areas we want to get better,” said Mr Smith.

“We have to work out as an organisation how much we want to outsource to AI. What are the costs of that. Do I, as an educator, know my students as well if I haven’t read their work?”, said Mr Smith.

The panel pointed educators toward taking a nuanced approach to AI, urging schools to use the tech to fill in analytical gaps and resource generation rather than speed up assessment, claiming this would run the risk of losing a connection with their students learning.

“If you don’t have that students are missing out on knowing their students learning,” said Ms Sayers.

“We have to understand what is it about a human teacher in a social environment that’s important, and use AI to fill in the gaps” added Mr Smith.

Educators were also encouraged to adopt a “traffic light” approach to AI instead of banning the software altogether in the hopes of creating a collaborative environment with students who will be taking advantage of ChatGPT generative info regardless of the guidelines.

Best swag on day one of EduTech 2024

At the end of every conference, we all get home with our bag of shame. Did we really need to collect so many pens and other novelty goods? Probably not. But they are an important tool in getting people to stop by your booth.

A great bit of swag can be a fantastic conversation starter too. Here’s some of the clever swag that caught the eye of EducationDaily on day one.

(Quietly, we were especially impressed with the pencil with seeds that could be planted to replace the wood in your pencil. And the mocktails at HPE Aruba.
