Learning real-world skills on-the-job is often the best education available to help people prepare for their professional pathway.
The Hachette Australia Internship Program, known previously as the Summer Internship, is now in its fifth year and is designed for those interested in pursuing a career in publishing.
This full-time internship lasts four months, offers an entry-level salary, and is available each summer. No formal qualifications are required. The Internship offers a comprehensive overview of the trade publishing industry, along with an in-depth look at how different departments collaborate within a commercial publishing house to bring books to their readers.
Reporting directly to Louise Stark, CEO of Hachette Australia, and receiving support from each divisional Director, the successful intern will gain a comprehensive 360-degree view of book publishing. This experience covers everything from acquisition and editorial processes to production, sales, distribution, finance, marketing, and publicity.
Hands-on experience is a powerful teacher
Hachette Australia represents an array of A-list authors on the international list, including Stephen King, Nora Roberts, John Grisham, Ronan Farrow and Delia Owens.
Over the past five years, Hachette Australia has focused on growing the Australian list with around 100 new titles published yearly and a line-up of locals includes bestselling authors. The publisher also proudly supports emerging writers through the Richell Prize, in association with the Emerging Writers’ Festival; the State Library of Queensland’s black&write! program; and in partnership with Express Media, the Hachette Australia Prize for Young Writers.
With an emphasis on engaged learning, this internship will provide the successful applicant with practical skills and valuable insights across all aspects of trade publishing, helping them discover their personal interests and empowering them to pursue their ideal career in the industry.
“This Internship has been an unparalleled experience, and I am truly grateful to have been selected as the 2024 candidate,” says the 2024 intern, Christiana Perdis, now a sales coordinator at Hachette Australia.
“My time in each department at Hachette has been engaging, illuminating and fun, and I felt encouraged to ask questions at every turn. I learned so much from the many lovely and talented people I encountered, in addition to developing a wonderful community of book friends.
“Throughout the internship, I gained valuable insights into both trade and non-trade publishing, as well as the wider Australian book industry; I also came to appreciate how integral each team is to the ultimate success of a title.
“I particularly enjoyed participating in Hachette’s dynamic communities and networks – especially those with a focus on Changing the Story. I look forward to continuing my learning, growing, and contributing to Hachette and the wider publishing industry.”
Interested applicants are invited to visit the Hachette Australia careers page for instructions on how to submit their CV, together with an expression of interest outlining what they most look forward to in a career in publishing, by close of business on Wednesday 4 December. The selected candidate will be announced on Monday 6 January 2025 with a start date of Monday 3 February 2025.
