The complete list of subjects impacted by this year’s Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) exam bungle has been revealed by the state’s Deputy Premier and Education Minister Ben Carroll.

In total. 56 VCE exams were caught in the bungle, including major subjects such as mathematical methods, English and legal studies. The figure represents almost half of all the 116 exams sat in the 2024 VCE.

The error occurred after the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority’s (VCAA) sample papers that were uploaded to familiarise students with test details were published with examination material hidden in the background of the documents, due to a publishing mistake.

“There is no risk that any other exams were impacted in this way,” Mr Carroll told reporters at parliament on Wednesday, 27 November.

Former VCAA CEO Kylie White resigned last week after the state government ordered a sweeping review of the body following years of errors in final assessments.

Answers across the 56 impacted exams will be reviewed to identify any anomalies in students’ responses. Marks will be adjusted if it is determined that anyone had an unfair advantage because of the exam upload error.

White’s interim replacement Marcia Devlin has endeavoured to assure students and families, stating that, in many cases, only a partial question or prompt was published.

An expert panel has ruled material that was published early for the English exam was either already in the public domain or so general that students would not have been aided in any way.

“I can assure all 46,000 students who sat the English exam this year that the marking of the exam will continue as usual,” Devlin says.

“No additional measures will be required for English or EAL (English as an Additional Language).”
