A state school in the heart of Brisbane, with heritage-listed buildings, will be demolished ahead of the 2032 Olympic Games.

The Queensland Department of Education revealed East Brisbane State School (EBSS) would be moved to Coorparoo Secondary College as a stand-alone school with new state-of-the-art facilities.

The relocation will cost the State Government $100 million and classes will begin at the new site, Term 1, 2026.

A spokesperson for the Department of Education said the new site has extensive green spaces, room for a pool and oval.

“The master plan includes an oval that is approximately 25 per cent larger than the current EBSS oval dedicated to the primary school and an even larger sports field adjacent to access,” they said.

“The master plan has been developed in consultation with the school communities and has been positively received by those involved.”

EducationDaily asked the Queensland Department of Education whether there had been any consideration given to how students will travel from East Brisbane to Coorparoo.

“The department is working with the Department of Transport and Main Roads and relevant stakeholders to address concerns about active and public transport access to the new site,” they said.

“This includes a possible connection of a bike pathway across Norman Creek adjacent to the Coorparoo Secondary College site.

“We will keep the community informed as this planning progresses.”

The Department of Education says further consultation will be had with the school’s community going forward.

School representatives have been approached for comment.
