Open to youth aged 16 to 23, the internationally recognised Commonwealth program takes participants on an immersive 11-day voyage aboard the square-rigged tall ship, Sail Training Ship (STS) Young Endeavour. One of the most unique aspects of this youth development scheme is its accessibility: absolutely no prior sailing experience is required to apply. No sailing experience is required – you just need a genuine willingness to learn, a commitment to contribute to a team, and a desire to embrace new challenges.
The Ultimate Experiential Classroom
Throughout each 11-day voyage, the youth participants become part of a diverse 24-person crew. Working together as a cohesive unit, they learn to navigate and sail a traditional tall ship under the guidance of a specially selected and trained Royal Australian Navy crew. This ensures that while the challenges are genuine, the highest standards of safety and care are strictly maintained at all times.
The maritime environment serves as a powerful catalyst for experiential learning. From setting and furling the sails and taking the helm, to keeping watch through the night and navigating changing weather conditions, every day at sea presents raw, immediate opportunities to learn through direct action. Onboard activities have real, measurable outcomes, whether a sail catches the wind correctly or the vessel stays on its proper heading relies entirely on the crew’s coordination.
Developing Crucial Skills for Life
Life onboard STS Young Endeavour is about much more than mastering the mechanics of a square-rigged ship. Living “between decks” in a close-knit community, participants develop essential soft skills that are highly sought after in the modern workforce. The unique environment fosters rapid growth in:
